9:30 am : pick-up from your accommodation in Sofia.
Your driver will collect you from your hotel or other type of accommodation within the city of Sofia.
10:00 am : arrival at Boyana church.
Free time to visit the church.
10:30 am : departure from Boyana church in direction to Rila Monastery.
12:30 pm : arrival at the Rila Monastery
Free time to explore the site and surrounding area until 15:30 pm.
There are several dining options in the area as well as an old bakery and small snack shop.
Optionally after arriving at the Monastery, the driver can take you free of charge, few kilometers further up the mountain to the cave of St. Ivan Rilski (St. John of Rila) the founder of the monastery.
A 15-20 min pilgrimage forest path will take you to the cave where Bulgaria's most praised Saint has lived.
Comfortable walking shoes and basic hiking abilities are required (rocky/slippery surface).
After visiting the cave the Shuttle will take you down at the Rila Monastery for your self-guided tour.
15:30 pm : departure from the Rila Monastery in direction to Sofia city. About 2 hours journey to Sofia.
17:30 pm : arrival in Sofia city. Drop off at your accommodation in Sofia.
The Rila Monastery is a holy place for Bulgarians and Orthodox Christians.
Please talk quietly in the monastery yard and inside the churches. Photos are allowed in the yard but not in the church. No shouting and smoking please.
Please dress up accordingly: high heels, short skirts and trousers, shirts with no sleeves, etc. are not allowed.
The Rila Monastery is located high in the Rila National Park, so consider taking warmer clothes even in summer and comfortable walking shoes.
